Working with high voltages requires a proper setting up and operating a hipot testing workstation.

When we test voltage on commercial equipment we need to take proper precaution, else the result can vary from small errors to even death of the operators.

That’s why we insist on establishing a safe testing environment when working with high voltages.

This requires following the four parameters:

● Proper Training

● Power Supply

● Regular maintenance

Potential hazards: Training should emphasize the dangers of high-voltage electricity, including electrical shock, burns, and arc faults. Operators should be aware of the signs and symptoms of electrical shock and know how to respond to emergencies.

Safe operating procedures: Training should provide clear guidelines on how to safely set up, operate, and maintain the hipot tester. This includes proper grounding techniques, safe handling of test leads, and precautions against accidental contact with energized components.

Suitable Location

Well-ventilated area: The testing area should have adequate ventilation to prevent the buildup of heat and smoke, which can be a fire hazard. Consider using protective barriers or enclosures to isolate the test area and prevent accidental contact with high voltage.

Clear workspace: The area should be free from obstructions that could interfere with the testing process or create tripping hazards. Keep metal objects, such as tools, jewelry, or loose clothing, away from the test area to prevent accidental contact with energized components.

Isolated location: The testing station should be located in a separate area or enclosed within a designated safety zone to minimize the risk of accidental exposure to high voltage. Maintain a safe distance between the hipot tester, the test object, and the operator to minimize the risk of electrical shock or arc faults.

Power Supply

Adequate capacity: The power supply should be capable of providing the required voltage and current for the hipot tester.

Proper grounding: Ensure that the power supply is grounded to provide a safe path for electrical current in case of a fault.

Dedicated circuit: If possible, connect the hipot tester to a dedicated circuit to avoid overloading the electrical system.

Voltage stabilizer and Surge protector: Consider using a voltage stabilizer to protect the hipot tester from voltage fluctuations that could damage the equipment or compromise test accuracy and a surge protector can help safeguard the hipot tester from sudden voltage spikes that can occur during electrical storms or power outages.

Regular Maintenance

Inspect power cords: Regularly inspect power cords for signs of wear, damage, or fraying. Replace damaged cords immediately.

Check grounding: Periodically verify the integrity of the grounding connection to ensure proper safety.

Clean and maintain: Keep the power supply and associated components clean and free from dust or debris to prevent overheating and other problems.
